The hidden cost of "just a desk job"

Musculoskeletal disorders quietly drain billions from UK businesses each year. A look at where the cost really lives — and how a five-point posture check can claw it back.

Desk work looks harmless. A chair, a screen, a keyboard — nothing that should send anyone home aching. And yet musculoskeletal complaints remain the single biggest cause of lost working days across the UK office economy, year after year. The HSE's most recent figures put the bill in the billions, and that is only the part employers can see.

The hidden part lives lower down the ledger. It shows up as the developer who quietly leaves at four because their wrist is grumbling. The account manager who books a half-day every fortnight for the physio. The line manager who avoids long meetings because their lower back has stopped tolerating their chair. None of it appears as injury. All of it appears as drag.

When we walk into a workplace for the first time, we do not start with the chairs. We start with five small things — screen height, elbow angle, lumbar contact, footrest, and reach distance for the mouse. Get those five right and most teams report meaningful relief inside a fortnight. The science here is unglamorous and well-settled; the wins are equally unglamorous and equally real.

If you suspect the hidden cost is working against you, you do not need a programme. You need a quiet hour, a tape measure, and someone willing to look properly. That is usually where we begin.
